Introduction and objectives

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and Office of the Commissioner for Khadi and Village Industries (OCKVI) have started working together for the cause of rural artisans with a view to upgrade and develop their skills and for classification and documentation through print and electronic media and provide a teaching learning environment in the area of art, craft and design round the country. In first phase Certificate Programmes in Pottery, Bamboo, Metal work and Stone Carving is to be designed and delivered. Certificate Programme in Craft and Design (Pottery) (CCDP) has already been started since January’2005.The programme has been developed and delivered with help of various experts, organizations, employer groups and professional bodies. Other certificate and diploma programmes will follow.

Certificate Course in Craft and Design (CCDP) – Pottery

Important statistics



First of its kind, the CCDP programme was launched in Jan’2005 for the Jan –June cycle. The first induction meet was held on 12th Feb’2005 at Gandhi Darshan, IGNOU regional center-I, Rajghat, New Delhi

CCDP is a Six month Certificate Programme, consisting of four courses of 18 credits. One credit approximately amounts to 30 hours of study comprising all learning activities.There are 4 courses in all of which 1 is Theory and 3 are Practical. The list is attached.

Eligibility for Admission
  • No formal qualification required
  • No age bar
Medium of Instruction
This programme is offered both in Hindi and English medium. Printed bilingual course materials are sent to the students. CD’s, Radio-counseling and Tele-counseling sessions, Practical Training facilities are available at Programme Study Centers

Duration of the Programme
The programme has been designed for a minimum duration of Six months. A student once admitted, his registration will remain valid for two years.

Fee Structure
Fee for this programme is Rs.2500/-
Fee exemption: For SC/ST Candidates Fee reimbursement is available through State Welfare Department.

When to Join?
The enrolment to the course starts every January and July for the January-June and July- December cycles respectively. Free Application form can be availed form the website www.ignou.ac.in or from the respective programme study centers, IGNOU regional centers on any working day.

Certificate course in Craft and Design (CCDP) - Pottery

Practical/Theory session/schedule

THEORY SESSIONS

You have one course in theory ‘world of clay’. This course consists of six books. These books are written in a self explanatory manner and you can understand while going through it.

However 12 counselling sessions will be conducted at your study centre to clarify any doubts in them. You are advised to get schedule from your study centre for them and the practical sessions.

You should come prepared in the counselling session and read the concerned units before coming to the session.

Teleconferencing sessions will be conducted on Gyan Darshan (Exclusive DD channel for education) which can be viewed at IGNOU Regional centres or at your home if it comes on your cable TV network. Teleconferencing schedule for theory and practical sessions will be provided to you later.

These will be interactive sessions where you can ask your doubts and queries by phone from home or toll free numbers at regional centres.

PRACTICAL SESSIONS
There are three types of Practical Sessions. First is Lab Practical which will be conducted at your study centre. Second is Home Practical which you can do at your home and third is the Field Practical which will require outdoor activities and surveys.

Type I : Lab Practical
Following Practical Sessions are to be conducted by the learners at their assigned Programme Study Centres under supervision of trained teachers. Self-Instructional Practical books will also be provided. 75% attendance is compulsory for these practical. This practice is the minimum to acquire basic skills in wheel pottery. You are advised to practice more for mastering the skills.

(a) Basics of Dynamic Forms - 18 sessions
(b) Dynamic Forms - I - 06 sessions
(c) Colouring and Decoration 04 sessions
(d) Glazing 02 sessions
(e) Drying and Firing 06 sessions

Type II: Home Practical

Following Practical Sessions and Tasks are to be done by the learners at home at the time convenient to them. Tele-counselling and radio-counselling sessions will be conducted for guidance and clarifying doubts. Self-Instructional Practical books will also be provided. You will have to submit your hand built pottery products at the end of your term and show it to the examiner of practical sessions for final marking of the continuous evaluation part.

You will also be given one book on design fundamentals and other on design practical to guide you. You are advised to understand concepts from design fundamentals and make a project design file and complete your tasks in the file as directed in the design practical book. The project design file will have to be submitted to the study centre for evaluation and final marking/ grading at the term end.

(a) Hand Built Pottery 13 sessions
(b) Design Practical 12 sessions

Type III: Field Practical

Following Practical and Projects are to be done by the learners in groups in field/market. Tele-counselling and radio-counselling sessions will be conducted for guidance and clarifying doubts. Self-Instructional Practical books will also be provided.
(a) Preparation of Clay in Field: 2 days field visit in group in the nearby area.
(b) Marketing Project

Note
* Continuous Practical report of the experiments done by the learners will be submitted to the practical counselors who will be giving comments on the performance of the learners. The final marking out of 30 will be done by the examiner for the final practical examination on the basis of the comments and the report submitted by the learners.

* * There will be two Project Reports one on Design and other on Marketing. The report should be duly signed by the counselors / Programme Incharge along with their comments on the work. The reports will be sent to the SRED. The evaluation and marking out of 50 for each project will be done by the examiners through SRED.

Passing Percentage:
The passing Percentage will be 40 % for each section and overall.

Grading:
Grades will be given on the basis of the overall marks obtained by the learners as given in the table below
